Hoping This Helps Any

I may have mentioned that I work as a dispatcher for PA State Police. Due to something recent I feel the need to offer proper advice to help any of you in the future.

If EVER you have a friend or loved one that you believe is in danger of being harmed or harming themself, do call the police in the area where the friend or loved one lives or is currently located.

An example: Sibling A receives an email from sibling B suggesting suicide. Sibling A should call the police department that covers the town that sibling B resides. Sibling A can explain the situation and ask for a welfare check on sibling B and/or make arrangements to meet the police at sibling B's home to determine if there is a real cause for concern. Sibling A should not wait, EVER. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Sibling A should provide full name of sibling B including proper spelling of name, age, date of birth, physical description and any known medical/mental health problems. A description of sibling B's vehicle is very helpful. Sibling A should give the best explanation of the last time sibling B was seen or heard from and the nature of that communication. Think of people and places that are relevant to sibling B. Start calling everyone that is known to sibling B. Definitely provide information on any firearms owned or thought to be owned.

Searching for the proper Police Dept is easy. Start with Google and pick a department and call to see if they cover the area where the friend or loved one resides. If not, they may know the department that does cover that area and provide you with contact info. Never wait. Also be aware that most police departments in rural areas have fewer officers working at night than during the day and evening shifts. An active domestic is going to take precedent over a welfare check. It may be a while before the officers can check on the friend/loved one.

I commend you for the work you do.The calm voice of reason and concern is always a welcoming voice and the best liaison the public has.Fear these days comes from the actions of our now paramilitary police force who have been forced into that role
through the senseless and out of control public that have no respect for law enforcement or the job that they have sworn to uphold.

They're the greatest defense we have from one another and it's about time people start helping them instead of burying their heads in the sand and letting the criminal element manipulate their lives through fear!

Thank you for being that liaison and calming voice. We lost a very special
person with your extraordinary talent.A twenty plus year veteran dispatcher.A mother and loving wife and a class act to a drunk driver going the wrong way on the freeway just minutes after signing off and on her way home one morning.

Using more than all the road!

Sorry to hear of your loss. The area I'm from lost a County 911 dispatcher to cancer a few months back.

OUTSTANDING advice! Too many people suffer in silence and slip into that dangerous thought process.

I'm hoping this helps those who are not sure what to do when they have a cause for concern. If you believe that your friend/loved one is not at home but in an area that they have been known to frequent, call the police in that area, not where the friend/loved one resides. Example: State Parks, hotels, etc.
