Maple Smoked Ham...🍁... and First Impressions 😊

It's the middle of the end, of winter, over here and I had an idea. "How about a picnic?" I asked. The sun was shining and it was, so... much warmer, than the minus 100, it felt like, last week. "Let's do it!" I said. She agreed, and I put my phone down. Off I drove, to pick her up - on the other side, of the island.

Along the way (not far from her place), I popped into a small grocery store, to buy the supplies. Fresh bread, some maple smoked ham, olives and (of course) strawberries. Oh... and some cheese. I stood in front of a sliding glass door and stared. The chrome racks, were piled high with, Kraft Singles and boxes of Velveeta . I was hoping, for something more eclectic. You know... brie... camembert... strong cheddar? I glanced the elderly woman shopper beside me and asked.

"Is this all the cheese they have?"

"Well... How much do you need?"

I looked her and blinked. By the time I got to my lady friend's house, she was waiting for me, outside and quickly jumped into the car. I told her my story, about the cheese and... other things. She listened to me; in the same way, you'd listen to the announcements, at the subway station - just enough to notice, if there were any emergencies. I could tell, she was distracted.

She then spoke, and told me about her day. She had a unique, high pitched voice. How would I describe it? Well... if a baby carrot could talk, that's how it might sound. Something else, in her demeaner, led me to sense, she was very sad. She was always, such a happy person. Yet... I know... even in a bright candle flame, there is always, a touch of blue. She gradually, revealed to me, why she was upset. Her oldest daughter, had decided to move, out of her home, and into an apartment - with her new boyfriend.

I asked her what she thought of him. Turns out, she'd only met him a few times and her first impressions, weren't good ones. My mind drifted... a bit. Who has the patience or the time for anything other than first impressions, these days, right? You only get 142 characters on twitter. Your hi-speed internet, better stream that video, without a hitch, or you're picking up the phone. That express checkout lane, is just never, fast enough.

I quickly, came back into the conversation and listened to her, talk about the boy. I tried to reassure her, that all she needed, was time, to get to know him better. Time... to see the same things, her daughter sees. I'm not sure she agreed with me. But the way I looked at it - she didn't have a choice. Not if she was going to have a good relationship, with her daughter. Or was I wrong?

Snow had started to fall. The weather here, changes faster, than those lights, on that least favorite, intersection, we all know. Altered plans: the picnic would be at my place. I made a right, at the next street. I knew of a cute, little Italian deli, that sold great cheeses.

..........................................................
So...
Do first impressions hold true for you or do you ever change your mind about someone?
What first impressions do think you give off?

Bonus Question : Are you a cheese person or would you pass on the smelly ones?

Analogies & metaphors, are so much fun. Yes... perhaps, I got carried away... lol 😁

First impressions don't always hold true for me. Many times, after I get to know someone, I end up changing my opinion about them, completely.😊 Afterwards, I find it hard to believe that I ever thought of them in that other way.😱 But you know.. that was a vibe I got from them...πŸ€”I

First impressions that I give off? Eeee.. I sometimes wonder, what type of first impressions I give off? 😢 I'm almost afraid to say... 'Smarmy', one person called me once. Then again, she doesn't know me at all. I'd say I probably come across, sometimes, like a 'smart ass' . 😱 But a really, really nice 'smart ass'... 😊

I'm a huge cheese guy. I don't think there is a cheese that I don't like.
I don't mind the smelly ones either... Blue cheese.. bring it on. With some wine and bread... fantastic!πŸ§€ 🍞🍷😊

Yep.. we smart asses gravitate towards each other here on this site my coffee mate..I am a fellow smart ass who loves other smart asses...lol.

usually always go with the first impression as you know within a few minutes of meeting someone whether you will like them or not. There is usually a vibe we all give off when meeting anyone..

I do give one a second chance to make a first impression on me though, just the odd time, thinking maybe that person was just having a bad day.. If we meet again and they are still not to my liking, then there is no other chance in changing my mind about them.. Great story and question my morning Coffee Mate..

first impressions are important ....and lasting. I try an make good ones...i also try and gauge the others personna before delving into the dark sides...lol. I always give a second shot at it though, i think its like a restaurant....i mean maybe the chef was having a bad day the first visit. We all are entitled to and allowed a bad day....in my book.

Cute story....

i love cheeses too....wonderful on the palate....not so much on the waistline. Ahhh but oh well ~~

Mmmmm stinky cheese!!!! Love it!

First impressions usually hold true for me... tho I think the first impression I give is dependent on circumstance lol! I don't tolerate stupidity very well and sometimes people are stupid right out of the gate so I'm sure their impression of me is I'm a right cunty bitch!

I'm a pretty poor judge of character. My 1st opinions are almost always way off. I feel like people need to know me to like me, but "see previous statement", so what do I know. When it comes to cheeses I'm pretty mainstream. Not a big fan of Velveeta and loathe American cheese.

Oh, dear. That cheese shop one liner has tickled my funny bone more than it's been tickled in a long time. I've gone back to read it at least 4 times while trying to write this comment!

What was the question? Oh! Yeah! First impressions ..... it's very difficult to overcome a bad first impression and sometimes I can't. I usually give people a second chance; places and things rarely. A first impression of me would probably contain words like friendly, cheerful or funny.

I like mild cheeses and at the risk of being reviled by cheese snobs everywhere .... I think I single handedly support the Velveeta industry! (though not for picnics. Picnics require cheddar or Colby or Gouda)

Give me Brie or Smoked Gouda or Meunster of Monterrey Jack any day I love cheese with the exception of Gorgonzola ( I cant say why here- would spoil your lunch )
I try to give folks a second chance but mostly unless they are really shy, the first one is spot on. Like my new neighbors- the first encounter was after my first surgery and shews in my face about where to go for something she brought that she felt I needed ( I do not). Impossible to talk her down. I gave it two more tries- it's going to be a No Go.

Interesting story talking like a baby carrot huh, I have to say first impressions to me are everything. As I have always had this knack about first impressions of people and I am hardly ever wrong. If she was so close to her daughter then she would of known more about the young man her daughter was dating. As when your close to your daughters they tell you everything well at least in my family.

Thanks for the interesting read, and I hope you got those cheese's you wanted and the picnic turned out to be everything you wanted. I hope you have a great day..

Yes .... big points for the metaphors. BIG. They were blended into your story so well, adding a subtle flavor that is only recognized when it's missing. Your writing contained them long before I came along. It's what drew me in .... the flavor of your writing.

I probably should have used another vegetable analogy... right? Which vegetable would you have used to describe a higher pitched voice...lol... 😁
About the daughter.. You'd think she would know more, but her daughter is in her 20's and pretends to be pretty independant. I have 2 daughters and they've surprised me, on a few occasions... πŸ˜•πŸ˜— You're lucky, to have had such an open relationships in your family.
The picnic was not the outdoor's feast I had in mind, but we salvaged the day.. 😊

Although.. can someone really talk like a baby carrot? I might have used another vegetable, but I left that one in there.. out of sheer fatigue, in trying to find one more suitable.. Lol... 😁 I'm sure you would have found another more apt fit? Brussels sprout.. perhaps? Lol πŸ‘

I love cheese, all kinds. Sometimes we even make our own, from our cows. Yummy.

Baby carrot, I'm trying to think of another veggie. Green bean comes to mind. lol

I am somewhat a good judge of character, but I will totally give someone a second chance. We all have off days. As far as her and the daughter go, been there, done that. You can accept a bad situation, but you're not approving and it does interfere with the parent/child dynamic. Especially when you see it's not a healthy one. I'm 3 for 3 on my first impressions of the experiences I've had.

No, not Brussels sprouts...they are round and round things tend to have a deeper voice. I thought baby carrot was good .... I could easily picture a sound similar to hungry baby birds cheeping for their next worm. I actually knew someone with a voice like that.

Overall, I think I am pretty good at 'sizing' someone up based on a first impression.
Would I consider giving someone a second chance? Sure if I felt there was an underlying reason why things got off on the wrong foot.
I do enjoy a variety of cheeses and haven't tried one yet that I couldn't appreciate.
A winter picnic sounds like a lot of fun. I will bring the wine.

I guess I should pay closer attention. To what I say.

Anyone can have a bad day now and then. So perhaps a first impression can be overlooked if negative. I might come off differently depending on my mood. Sometimes I am bubbly and effervescent other times I am much more reticent. I try to be nice person in every situation. Manners. I suppose if I am in a good mood my sense of humor is more spontaneous.

I really liked your depiction of the woman's voice as a baby carrot. Makes one think. I laughed at the comment about is that all the cheese they have here...

I used to love cheese but I have a bit of lactose intolerance so I don't eat it as much anymore. I like Munster and Monteray Jack to go with crackers. I like Provolone for subs. Feta cheese in salads. Parmesan and Romano on pasta. And Mozzarella. I don't use Velveeta much but since you mentioned it I want a slice. LOL Also I want babybel cheese. I guess I am not such a fan of stinky cheeses though. Cheese is addictive according to science...something about casomorphins which are similar to opiods(opium and morphine). Check it out.

So you'll give a person more than one chance.. That's good to know. I guess that works for you? 😊
I made myself laugh as I was writing this piece. Do you ever make yourself laugh or cry at the things you write? It's weird no? πŸ“πŸ˜πŸ˜‚
Addictive.. right? I'll google that. Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing... πŸ‘πŸ˜‰

I try very hard not to make a judgement of anyone when I first meet them, because I know that one meeting does not tell all about anyone.

Yes, I've had a first impression that I later changed.

As for others' impressions of me, for the most part, I expect they will think I am a nice, friendly person. I try to treat everyone as I want to be treated.

First Impressions generally hold true, but there is that rare occasion when my initial impression both positive or negative was blindsided by actions. First impressions are usually based on conversation, attitude and sometimes action. I have experienced a situation where I really liked the person but I saw them treating their wife abhorrently in public. He didn't know I saw but the friendship I thought might arise I decided to forego.

Yep.. I can see that happening.. When you pay attention to people and how they treat others in public, you get a feel for who they really are...

Lets start with the cheese question/ I hate cheese / it's as simple as that. As for first impression upon meeting a person face to face I never
make any first impression we talk and I take him at face value./ as for myself
everybody reads me as a sweet, intelligent fun person.........that is if you take the time to actually talk to me / YOU Paul I dont see you as a smart ass. I see you as a snob cold person!.

I guess cheese is an acquired taste... not everyone likes everything. πŸ˜‰
Wow... You're really patient to give people so much time to impress you... Patience is always good... 😊
Well.. Hmmm.. I guess somehow I may be giving off that type of vibe to you.. Although.... with all due respect... I can't think of what I have said that gave you that impression... πŸ˜•
Well... Perhaps over time there still might be hope for me to have you change your mind about me. 😊
Otherwise.. You can't like everyone you meet on the planet. I imagine I might have to live with your opinion. Or somehow change.. But I don't even know where to start? πŸ€”πŸ™„

It's great if you can give off those type of positive impressions. And I agree, although we've never spoken in person. I get that type of intelligence from your posts and comments and playfulness in many of your blog posts.πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜‰
I have laughed at many of them... 😁
So all it takes is a bit of time and you win them over...
Patience might be something that I lack... occasionally πŸ€” Patience is deffinitely a good bit of advice that I could use. 😊

1. Do first impressions hold true for you or do you ever change your mind about someone?
2. What first impressions do think you give off?
3. Bonus Question : Are you a cheese person or would you pass on the smelly ones?

==================================================
1. I trust my instincts, aka "follow your gut", as that has never failed me. During a first time meeting of someone, your head is busy processing a gazillion other things going on around you, while listening/talking to the other person, and your heart wants what it wants, so both of those idiots are no good. But your gut- instincts? They are what keep you alive when necessary or in dire circumstances. One can never be too careful at times.

2. Hmm... most likely aloof and hard to read, if you're looking at the surface of what was written above. Yes, I can see that. Data bytes on a computer screen are a poor impression, and though I type the same way that I talk (writer's blessing/curse), sometimes things can get lost in translation. I feel that we're both better off talking on the phone, then meeting face to face in a public setting to se if we click. Once we're face to face, I'm observant, maybe more than your average lady, but I'm quite focused on you as well as my surroundings. When we both start to relax and get acquainted with the other's energies, there's a nice blending that takes place. Some call it chemistry, and it can't be forced; it's either there or it isn't. If I don't feel it, I'll apologize and wish the person well on their search.

3. Cheese? Oh hell yeah! No American cheese though, or any other one wrapped in cellophane. That isn't cheese. Velveeta I can tolerate, because it mixes well with Rotell (c) when you're making a spicy queso dip for a party. But you won't catch me making homemade mac-n-chees with it- oh no. I'll use something else. Sharp cheddar most likely, or if I'm making it for myself and no one else, I'll use bleu cheese. Oh man, mac-n-bleu cheese-- YUMM! I haven't tasted a lot of imported cheese, but do love brie, and some other one from Ireland that I can't recall the name of. Gouda is overrated here, but I'll still eat it. I can find better tasting and more variety of cheeses in Trader Joe's or Whole Foods as opposed to the grocery.

Gut feeling works for me as well... usually... πŸ€”
So you talk the way you write? Quite a few writers do that... Aloof and well organized as well... hmmm. πŸ˜‰
You might have a field day in this part of the world, with the choices I have. Tons of options including those that are not pasteurized... Goat cheese and a nice blue with a glass of wine and a fresh baguette? The invitation is an open one... πŸ·πŸ™‚
